paratum habeo

paratum habeo
/pareytam hasbiyow/ I have him in readiness. The return by the sheriff to a capias ad respondendum, signifying that he has the defendant in readiness to be brought into court. This was a fiction, where the defendant was at large. Afterwards he was required, by statute, to take bail from the defendant, and he returned cepi corpus and bailbond. But still he might be ruled to bring in the body
